5 minúcias sobre Nova York / 5 New York Minutiae

Nesse último post sobre Nova York (confira os outros posts sobre a cidade aqui) resolvi falar das minúcias (tópico que amo!) sobre Nova York. E pra não deixar de tocar no assunto Copa do Mundo, segue uma curiosidade sobre Nova York durante essa Copa: devido ao bom desempenho dos EUA na Copa, muitos americanos tem se interessado mais pelo esporte, ao ponto que o prefeito de Nova York deu duas horas de almoço para os funcionários públicos no último jogo que rolou dos EUA, contra a Alemanha, jogo que aconteceu durante o horário de almoço americano. Conclusão: ser funcionário público é bom em qualquer lugar, não é, minha gente?

On this last post about New York (check the other posts about the Big Apple here) I decided to point out some minutiae (a topic I love) I found around in the city. And since it's the World Cup, here's a World Cup curiosity involving New York: because the United Sates has been having such a good run on the World Cup, many Americans have turned their attention to football to the point that the mayor of New York decided to give public workers two hours for lunch during the last game the US had against Germany. The conclusion being it's nice to be a public worker anywhere! :)

O Memorial de 9 de Setembro - NYC / 9/11 Memorial - NYC

Em Nova York tive a oportunidade de visitar o memorial de 9 de setembro. A coisa funciona assim: você entra numa fila e vai passando por vários painéis com informação do desastre. Ao longo da fila existe aquele clima meio fúnebre de que algo triste aconteceu ali e logo todos são tomados por aquele sentimento. Depois você passa por um detector de metal (acho que eles ainda acham que vão explodir aquele lugar...) e logo a fila se abre para uma praça ampla feita para lembrar o incidente. Há algumas árvores, várias placas com informação do ocorrido, um mini-museu e dois "buracos" gigantes onde estavam as torres. Ao redor dos buracos há os nomes das vítimas e bombeiros envolvidos com o acidente. É bem legal, mas se sua agenda está apertada, é um programa que pode ser evitado. Também me parece ser algo mais para americanos, que sofreram muito por ter perdidos conterrâneos naquela situação.

While in New York, I had the opportunity to visit the 9/11 memorial. This is how it works: you enter a line and walk through a path with boards telling the story of the tragedy. Along the line, though, there's this sad feeling since you're remembering such a big tragedy in U.S.'s history. Afterwards you go through a metal detector and the line soon opens up to a square made to remember the event. There are some trees, several boards about the event and a small museum. Also, there are two big "holes" on the ground, where the towers used to stand. Around them there's a list of the victims' and the firefighters' names. It's pretty cool, but if you're running a tight schedule it's something that you can leave for next time. It seems to me that it's something more significant to Americans since it was something that deeply hurt their country.

Times Square - NYC

A Times Square é de fato um lugar mágico. Não é a toa que tem tanto frenesi ao redor dessa área. Lembro a primeira vez que visitei o lugar. Fui de metro, e a saída do metro desembocava exatamente no meio de toda aquela confusão e espetáculo de luzes. Lembro que ao sair do metro fiquei completamente atordoada e enfeitiçada com tudo que passava ao meu redor. E a Broadway? Noooossa a Broadway... me apaixonei pelas peças. Vi O Rei Leão e Chicago e me deu vontade de ver todas as peças de tão perfeitas e sem erro que são os musicais, as notas musicais, e as coreografias. São tantas luzes que as ruas da Times Square nem precisam de postes para iluminá-las. Ao redor só se encontra turistas igualmente deslumbrados com tantas opções de entretenimento! Um local imperdível!

 Times Square is indeed a magical place. No wonder there's so much talk around it. I remember the first time I visited it. I went there by subway. The subway exit was right in the middle of all those lights and craziness. I was mesmerized. And Broadway? Wow! I fell in love with th musicals. I saw The Lion King and Chicago and I wish I had had time to see all the other musicals. Everything was so perfect and on point: the musical notes, the dancing, the singing... It's a must-go to place indeed!

todos os super-heróis estavam lá, até o Homem-Aranha e o Batman no fundo / all the superheroes where there like Spider man and Batman

os personagens da Disney ficam na rua esperando crianças passarem implorando aos pais para tirar uma foto com eles. Boa jogada! / Disney characters hang around waiting for kids to walk by begging their parents to take a picture with them. Nice played!

perto da virada do Ano Novo é possível fazer um pedido para o ano seguinte e anexar no centro de turismo na Times Square. Depois eles colocam todos os desejos dentro daquela bolona que desce a meia noite. O meu tava lá! / When the New Year's Eve approaches you can write your wishes for the following year and have it inserted on the big ball that drops at midnight. Mine was there last year!

Brooklyn, NYC

A ponte Williamsburg é uma das que ligam Manhattan a Brooklyn / Williamsburg bridge. One of the bridges that connects Manhattan and Brooklyn

Brooklyn é um bairro muito legal. É só atravessar a Brooklyn bridge de Manhattan para chegar nesse paraíso hipster. Antigamente era um bairro de fábricas, mas hoje em dia vários espaços antes industriais estão virando casas, lofts, albergues e por aí vai. Daí que vem esse estilo "industrial" de decoração que tanto se vê atualmente. Brooklyn é um charme para sair do óbvio de Manhattan. Passeando pelas ruas do bairro você vê muita gente vestida de forma diferente - numa espécie de versão americana de Harajuku. Visitei um mercado de pulgas onde comprei esses anéis e escolhi soletrar "C'mon". Um passeio indicado também é cruzar a Brooklyn bridge num sábado de manhã, a paisagem da baía é linda.

Brooklyn is a really nice borough. Once you cross the Brooklyn bridge from Manhattan you'll arrive in this hipster paradise. Back in the day it used to be crammed with factories, but nowadays many of those sites are being transformed into lofts, hostels and stores. Hence this "industrial" decorating style which is so hot right now. Brooklyn is a great choice when it comes to doing something different. When walking through the neighborhood streets you see a lot of people dressed differently - like an American Harajuku version. I visited a flee market where I bought scramble rings which spelled "C'mon". It was lots of fun exploring something different. It's also really nice to take a walk on Brooklyn bridge on Saturday mornings, great bay view.

Washington Square Park - NYC

Atendendo pedidos, vamos falar de Nova Iorque! Um dos locais que visitei na cidade foi o Washington Square Park. Trata-se de uma praça pequena e perto do Central Park (por isso frequentemente ignorada). É um local de arte, então tem muitos artistas amadores se expressando de forma diferente. É uma ótima parada de descanso e reflexão. A arquitetura ao redor também é muito bonita, e esse arco da praça é bem famoso. Uma coisa curiosa que aconteceu enquanto eu estava lá foi um flashmob. Do nada pessoas vieram correndo para o centro da praça e começaram a dançar. No final, cantaram parabéns para um homem encarregado do flashmob. Ótima comemoração, não?

Let's talk about New York! One of the places in the city I truly enjoyed was Washington Square Park. It's a small park just outside Central Park and there are tons of artists showcasing their arts and expressing themselves. It's a great pit-stop to just relax and take a breather and the architecture around it is also great. Something funny happened while I was there: a flashmob. All of a sudden people came from everywhere and started to dance together. At the end they sang happy birthday to the guy in charge. Awesome birthday celebration, isn't it?

Esse intervalinho entre Natal e Ano Novo / These funny little days between Christmas and New Year's

Exatamente nessa época no ano passado eu estava em Nova York. Todo mundo sabe que a cidade é linda no Natal mas o que muita gente não sabe é que tem um centro de turismo na Times Square quando o Ano Novo se aproxima que permite que você escreva suas resoluções pro ano seguinte. Durante a virada, eles colocam todos os papeizinhos dentro daquela bolona enorme que desce durante a contagem final para o ano novo. E quando finalmente chega o ano seguinte, a bola se abre e todos aqueles papeizinhos são carregados por vento e esperança por cima da galera que sempre lota a Times Square na virada. Estando ou não em Nova York, esse final de ano é ótimo para pensar no que foi conquistado e no que seria bom conquistar no ano seguinte. Eu lembro do que pedi ano passado. Não alcancei 100% daquele objetivo, mas estou mais perto de fazê-lo do que estava naquela noite. E a vida continua....

Exactly around this time of the year last year I was in New York. Everybody knows the city is beautiful diring Christmas, but a lot of people don't know that you can get your resolutions for the upcoming year inside that big ball on New Year's Eve. On that night, they place all the post-its with different resolutions inside the big ball and the coutdown begins. Once it reaches zero, the ball opens up and all the resolutions in the colorful papers fly over the crowd at Times Square on New Year's Eve. Regardless if you're in New York or not, the end of the year is a great time to ponder over all that you've accomplished and what you would like to accomplish in the following year. I remember what I asked that night. I'm not there yet, but I'm much closer to my goals than I was that night. And so it goes...
